Success for T&T at 2010 ACENZ Innovate NZ Awards!

Tonkin & Taylor was delighted to win six ACENZ awards for engineering excellence at a special awards ceremony held in New Plymouth on Friday 30 July.

Tonkin & Taylor: Delighted to win six ACENZ Awards for engineering excellence.

T&T was presented with a Gold Award of Excellence for its work stabilising a massive landslip in Kawakawa Bay in South Auckland.  T&T designed the remedial works to increase the stability of the hillside within an exceptionally tight time frame.  The project highlighted how excellent teamwork with Manukau City Council, Earthquake Commission and NZTA, combined with high levels of consultation with wider stakeholders, helped this small community through what was a disruptive and difficult period.

T&T was awarded a Silver Award of Excellence for the 'MacKays Crossing Road over Rail Bridge SH1 Project', north of Wellington.  An innovative approach to an embankment design was integral to completing this project successfully for Fulton Hogan.

A second Silver Award of Excellence was presented for the BNZ Building at Harbour Quays in Wellington. The winning team included T&T and Beca and the project was completed for Fletcher Construction.  A clever foundation design was critical to the project’s success and it now presents a striking architectural design.

Three Awards of Merit were also presented to T&T on the night.  The first was awarded for the Achilles Point Lookout in Auckland, undertaken with Auckland City Council.  The new viewing platform and landscaped boardwalk provide a long-term, high visual impact upgrade of the memorial to the veterans of HMS Achilles from the Battle of the River Plate.  This project has also recently won the 2010 Ingenium Excellence Award for public infrastructure projects under $2 million.

A second Merit award was presented for 'Project West Wind', located on the west coast of Wellington.  The winning team included T&T, Beca and Opus and the project was undertaken for Meridian Energy.  The wind farm is one of the most productive in the world with an efficiency factor almost twice that of the world average.

Finally, Tauranga Harbour Link Stage 2, a project undertaken by URS and T&T for Fletcher Construction, was also presented with a Merit award.  Stage 2 of the harbour link opened in December 2009 and has eased traffic flows through Tauranga with some excellent engineering solutions.

Doug Johnson, T&T’s Managing Director, commented he is pleased with the awards, stating that all projects are ‘top of the line’ in New Zealand.  “We are thrilled to win these prestigious awards which highlight how passionate and innovative our employees are about the work they get involved in”, he said.
