In March 2010 Caleb was given the opportunity to work in T&T's Auckland office as a field assistant in the Ecology team. He decided to take the job and see how things worked out.
Caleb’s first major project was water quality monitoring in the Waitakere and Hunua Ranges. He was later involved in habitat assessments which involved water quality monitoring, electric fishing and assisting with vegetation assessments and bird surveys. Caleb is also currently involved in the Power Scheme monitoring project undertaking routine periphyton and macroinvertebrate sampling associated with our client’s resource consent requirements. “I really enjoy working out in the field. These projects have given me the opportunity to work in places that few people get to go. I am also very fortunate to work with experienced Environmental Scientists who are experts in their respective fields.”
In November 2010 Caleb was offered the chance of a permanent role within T&T’s Ecology Team and accepted it without hesitation. “Working casually on various projects for T&T gave me a taste of the real world of consultancy and made me realise that it is something I want to be a part of. A consultant requires a variety of skills in order to fulfil the different types of work that they are presented with. As an environmental scientist there are many disciplines in which you must be knowledgeable and T&T allows the opportunity to put this into practice. T&T employs staff from a range of backgrounds and it is rewarding to work alongside them and learn, allowing you to develop professionally and further your own skills “.
Caleb has enjoyed his first year working at T&T. “From day one everyone has been very approachable and interested in what you do. You definitely do not feel like just another face at T&T. The Auckland Office also has a great social club which is always organising events and activities. The monthly staff briefings are a great opportunity to get to know your fellow peers in an informal environment. A highlight for me this year was the Winter Solstice swim at which an impressive number of people showed up to brave the water!”
