"With so many career paths to choose from, it was the T&T stand at the Engineering Careers Fair that sold me the profession as a geotechnical engineer! I realised that geotechnical engineering was fundamental in all types of civil engineering as foundations are required for all forms of construction. There will be demand for geotechnical engineers for as long as infrastructure is being developed. T&T is recognised as one of the most prominent geotechnical specialists in New Zealand, so obviously I wanted to work for them.
After my first week of work, I had some amazing work stories to tell! I have since worked on a range of Earthquake Commission assignments and a large variety of hands-on site investigations. I have also been involved in larger tender jobs such as the Tauranga Eastern Link and more recently the Waterview Connection. These roles gave me invaluable experience and the opportunity to work as part of a large team of experts including other consultancies. T&T gives responsibility to young engineers early on which I believe is the best way to learn. The smaller projects gave me managerial experience where I could see the project through from start to finish. I also got the opportunity to help out with the residential land damage assessments after the Darfield Earthquake last year. It was a sobering and a once in a lifetime experience and I felt like I was doing my part for the country.
T&T is very supportive in fostering young careers and allows me to study my Masters of Engineering part time while working full time. There are also many specialists within the company who are very willing to give me guidance and assistance. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year with T&T and look forward to everything it has to offer in the future".
