Award winning civil engineer Alan Pickens has contributed to the science and implementation of more than 20 dams in New Zealand and overseas.

Tonkin & Taylor (T&T) is delighted that Alan has won the Institute of Professional Engineers NZ 2011 Angus Award. During his 48 year career as a civil engineer specialising in geotechnical and water resources engineering he has applied innovative approach to design, and demonstrated clear advancement of engineering practice.
Notable projects with significant contribution from Alan include South Canterbury’s 50m high Opuha Dam (Alan was design manager); Auckland's 80m Mangatangi dam; Nelson's Maitai dam; Wellington’s Te Marua water supply dam; and the Bay of Plenty’s Aniwhenua hydro power scheme dams.
As part of all the above activities he has always been ready to pass on his experience and skills to younger engineers and challenge them to think “outside the square”. He has developed a range of innovative and cost-effective designs throughout his career. Alan sets a pre-eminent standard of excellence with a wide range of clients both within T&T and as an independent consultant engineer.
Having spent 30 years with T&T prior to 1995, the organisation is privileged to retain Alan as a consultant.
