Marje Russ appointed Lead trainer at United Nations Environment Workshop!

Tonkin & Taylor’s Sustainability Business Manager, Marje Russ, recently participated in a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) workshop on eco-labelling in Bonn, Germany.

The train-the-trainer workshop – “Eco-labelling: What is it and how to do it” is part of a four year project UNEP is completing with InWENT (a German capacity building institution) and a number of partner organisations in developing countries.  The project is being funded by the European Commission and German government.

The overall purpose of the project is to enable developing countries to seize eco-label opportunities and to increase the environmental efficiency of key export products in the target countries using eco-labelling as a tool.  The project aims to increase the number of products from the target countries with the European eco-label and develop a roadmap to increase co-operation and mutual recognition between national eco-labelling programmes.

The project involves targeting textile products from India and South Africa, footwear products from Kenya and Mexico, paper products from Brazil and television products from China.  The Global Eco-labelling Network (GEN) is a key partner for work on co-operation and mutual recognition.

The train-the-trainer workshop was designed to equip national experts from the target countries to deliver training at home about the concept of eco-labelling, the European eco-labelling programme, the technical requirements for the target products to be labelled, and how companies and governments can market and support eco-labelled products and programmes.

A team of eleven international eco-labelling experts developed and delivered the training, which was attended by 26 participants from the target countries.  Marje managed the workshop development and presentation in her role as Lead Trainer.  This validated cutting edge training methods she developed in New Zealand for numerous public and private training providers.

Marje commented that feedback on the usefulness of the workshop from both participants and partners has been extremely positive. “The workshop involved a high level of hands-on, very effective interactive work between highly competent national representatives.  All delegates left the workshop with concrete plans to deliver training in their home countries” she said.
