The Northern Gateway Alliance (NGA) recently won an Environmental Excellence Award for the SH1 Northern Motorway extension project. The NGA picked up the supreme environmental award at the NZ Contractors Federation Conference held in August. The project won the award in the category for projects greater than NZ$10 million in value.

The NGA comprises Transit New Zealand, Tonkin & Taylor, Leighton Contractors, Fulton Hogan, URS and Boffa Miskell and was formed to construct 7.5 km of motorway north of Auckland, from Orewa to just south of Puhoi.
Mr Peter Millar, T&T’s Managing Director, commented that the project passes through a diverse landscape that includes steep topography, large tracts of native forest, significant streams and estuaries and pastoral farmland. "One of the key challenges for the Alliance was ensuring the impact on the environment was taken into consideration at every stage of the project" he said.
Some of the design solutions driven from environmental considerations included the creation of eco-viaducts to ensure habitats and continuity of native forests and culvert designs that included the creation of both fish passage and habitat.
