ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP MANAGER
Gerard Bird

Gerard is a Director of Tonkin & Taylor and manager of the company’s Environmental Group.

Gerard’s technical background is in hydrogeology. He is a Chartered Geologist and Fellow of the Geological Society. He has over 27 years professional experience, largely in the fields of contaminated land investigation and remediation, and environmental management systems development and auditing. He has been involved in major development projects in New Zealand and Australia, throughout South East Asia and the Pacific, and in the UK and Turkey.

Gerard has investigated and remediated over 100 closed landfill sites including redevelopment projects such as The Gate, the Seamount building (the largest warehouse in New Zealand) and MOTAT2. He has been involved in the remediation of former gasworks sites, pesticide disposal dumps and a large number of operating industrial sites. Recent and current projects include directing investigation and remedial works for the double tracking of Auckland’s rail network and for a large number of the city’s waterfront redevelopment buildings. He has carried out environmental management system development and training work for many companies including Unilever, Mobil, Ballance Agrinutrients and Telarc in New Zealand, and Sime Darby and the Department of Environment in Malaysia.

Gerard continues to provide oversight and direction to key projects across T&T’s New Zealand, Australian and Asian operations.
