T&T won the Gold Award for the impressive Kate Valley Landfill project in North Canterbury. To achieve a Gold Award a project must contain a ‘leading edge’ technique or feature, show an exceptional level of service to the client and display a number of outstanding innovations.
The landfill, which T&T designed for Canterbury Waste Services Ltd, was also declared an IPENZ New Zealand Engineering Excellence Award winner in 2006!
Tony Kortegast, Director of Environmental Engineering at T&T, commented that key features of the landfill design include a multi-layer soil/geocomposite liner design, complex base grade design, and the detailed geometric design of waste storage and landfill access roads. In addition, two dams (for sediment control and water supply) were constructed, each involving significant design challanges.
An ACENZ Award of Merit was also awarded to T&T, in conjunction with Sinclair Knight Merz Ltd and Works Infrastructure for Project Black Point, Stage 1. Project Black Point is one of the largest pumped irrigation schemes in New Zealand and aims to reduce the susceptibility of the North Otago Downlands to severe drought.
Peter Millar, T&T's Managing Director, is delighted with the awards, stating that both projects are ‘top of the line’ in engineering terms in New Zealand. “We were thrilled to win these two prestigious awards, which show how passionate and innovative our employees are. It was also extremely pleasing to see that T&T was involved in various engineering aspects for six of the other award-winning projects presented on the night”, he said.
