GEOTECHNICAL - EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING
Tim Sinclair

Tim is the firm’s senior geotechnical earthquake engineering and seismic hazard specialist. He has over 30 years experience in general civil engineering and has worked in many parts of the world, some being particularly earthquake prone such as Iran and Philippines, as well as New Zealand.

Tim has carried out a number of seismic hazard studies for important (Category 4) projects including new hospital buildings at Hastings, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill, and seismic hazard assessments for several hydro-power or water-supply dams in Bay of Plenty and Waikato. These dams then progress to embankment response analyses and stability/deformation assessments under design earthquake loadings.

Tim has been responsible for a number of liquefaction and lateral spreading assessments and design of ground improvements, including the BP Terminal at Seaview, Te Papa in Wellington, Hewletts Road Flyover in Tauranga and a number of commercial development in the Bay of Plenty.

Tim has advised on earthquake engineering for numerous roading projects, particularly in relation to stability of road cuts and road embankments or retaining walls. These include the PJK Project and Hewletts Road Flyover in Tauranga, the Upper Harbour Highway in Auckland and the SH1 Northern Motorway Extension from Orewa to Puhoi.

Tim obtained his first degree at Oxford University and a MSc at Imperial College, London; the latter including a course in Seismology under Professor Ambraseys. More recently he took a Masters paper in Earthquake Engineering at Auckland University. He has published over 20 papers in various aspects of geotechnical engineering including several on earthquake topics.
