ENVIRONMENTAL - CONTAMINATED LAND
Tony Cussins

Tony (BSc, MSc (Hons)), is a Senior Environmental Project Manager, T&T’s Contaminated Land Team Leader and a Principal of the company. With 10 years experience, Tony’s specialist work area is the management of large scale contaminated land projects where the focus is on the assessment and remediation (including resource consents) for technically challenging multi-disciplinary projects.

Tony has managed the assessment and clean-up of a wide range of current and former hazardous waste, hydrocarbon, gasworks and metals contaminated sites throughout New Zealand. This has specifically included environmental site assessments, remediation and validation of a large number of current and former Carter Holt Harvey timber treatment sites throughout New Zealand, with over 20 sites fully remediated.

Tony directed the environmental site assessment and remediation of a 2.4 ha former Gasworks site in Auckland, New Zealand, including gaining regulatory approvals for development of the site for medium density residential use. Tony was also project manager for gaining regulatory authorisation to undertake remediation of the Mapua former pesticide manufacturing site, Nelson for Thiess Services.

Current major projects where Tony is managing multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental teams on consenting and construction projects include the Carter Holt Harvey Kinleith Integrated Remediation Project (KIRP), a one-off programme to clean up all the contaminated sites that it is responsible for in the Kinleith area and elsewhere in New Zealand. Tony is also managing the assessment and remediation of nine childcare centres in Auckland for the Auckland City Council.

Tony is an accredited RMA hearings commissioner, and is increasingly called upon to provide expert evidence in the Environment Court, and for the High Court, on contaminated land and hydrogeology issues.
