Glass in Penrose, Auckland, is important
not only as the only manufacturing plant for
glass bottles and jars in New Zealand, but
because of its integral role in glass recycling.
The discharges to air from glass smelters are
combustion products, such as nitrogen
dioxide and fine particulate (PM10).
In 2007, OI
glass submitted an application to
renew the air discharge consent for the
existing two furnaces and to authorise a
potential third furnace.
Transit New Zealand was the Requiring
Authority for a proposal to construct a new
road in Nelson City linking the Nelson CBD
and the Stoke/Richmond area.
The Nelson area experiences poor air quality as
a result of fine particulate emissions, primarily
from domestic heating in winter.
