Client : Lake Hood Extension Project Joint Venture.
Discipline : multiple
Lake Hood is an 84 ha man-made recreational
lake located near Ashburton, Canterbury. In order
to meet increased demand on the lake, the client
proposed to extend the lake by 94 ha and improve
and increase the associated recreational and
residential facilities.
Tonkin & Taylor were appointed to evaluate the
effects of the lake extension on water quality.
In addition to the Assessment of Environmental
Effects (AEE), the study identifi ed design and
management options to improve lake water
quality and the aesthetic appeal of the lake.
Tonkin & Taylor was engaged to undertake monitoring
and analysis of the river bed levels around the water
intake screens at Watercare’s Tuakau Water
Treatment plant on the lower Waikato River. The
project included coordinating two bathymetric
surveys extending 2 km either side of the Watercare
intake structure, with depths recorded to +/- 0.1 m.
Other available river data was obtained for the
study reach including river bed information, fl ow
data and dredging returns for the Waikato River.
We provided a review of the relevant available
information to assess trends in sediment movement
around the Waikato intake since its establishment.
