1970s

The Engineering Export Association of New Zealand is formed (ENEX), with Tonkin & Taylor as founding members. Asia New Zealand Development Consultants (ANZDEC) and Geothermal Energy of New Zealand (GENZL) are established with T&T as founding shareholders.

A permanent office is established in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Tonkin & Taylor (Malaysia) - and the first New Zealand office outside Auckland is opened in Wellington.

Further expansion of the client base, range of services and staff numbers dictate a move to new premises in George Street, Newmarket, Auckland.

Notable projects included: Aniwhenua Hydroelectric Scheme, foundation investigations and ground improvement for the Huntly Power Station, Mangatangi Water Supply Dam and, overseas, the Kelantan River Basin Study and the East-West and Gua Musang-Kuala Krai Highways in Malaysia.
